The Patent Counsel is an integral part of the Company’s in-house legal department reporting directly to Senior Patent Counsel and supporting and providing prudent, ethical, landscape-aware, and law-informed solutions for issues facing Cook in its discovery, development and commercialization of medical device products.


- Provide legal advice, support and assistance on Cook’s global intellectual property portfolio and various matters including but not limited to inventions, patents, copyrights, trade secrets and trademark matters in all jurisdictions.
- Collaborate and support the business and the patent team to formulate global IP filing and enforcement strategies.
- Evaluate and advise on invention disclosures, exclusivity, freedom to operate, patent validity and infringement, due diligence, contract licensing and litigation risk.
- Manage and actively oversee outside counsel in drafting, filing and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications and worldwide enforcement of intellectual property rights.
- Assist as requested with due diligence, contract negotiations, licensing matters, litigation, oppositions and other strategic initiatives.
- Remain well versed in relevant law, regulations and evolving developments in global IP law; advising management and other attorneys and recommending policy and/or process changes as needed.
- Develop and participate in educational and training programs, ensuring appropriate employees and management are knowledgeable of pertinent standards, policies and SOPs
- Effectively communicate across functions, divisions, and with both internal and external stakeholders
- Manage conflict in a way that recognizes and manages differing opinions and ideas and refocuses them in a positive and productive manner
- Multi-task and multi-deadline a large variety of projects effectively, on time and in a cost-efficient manner

- Identify legal training needs and requirements, particularly related to intellectual property, and assist with the development and delivery of training as necessary
- Foster and maintain a workplace culture respectful and supportive of individual differences
- Remain calm and receptive in fast paced situations
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and integrity
- Have excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to work in collaborative and independent work situations and environments with minimal supervision

- Comply with the rules of professional conduct for attorneys, as required by the state of licensure


• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, licensed to practice law in at least one of 50 states
• Registered to practice before the USPTO
• Background in life sciences or biomedical engineering preferred
• Intellectual property legal experience of 5+ years, in a law firm, government, in-house or a combination


Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations
• Majority of work is performed in general office environment
• Sitting for extended periods, utilizes close visual acuity for working with computers, etc.

• Ability to travel globally to interact with development, commercial, and third party entities to support contract requirements
• Travel including domestic, international and weekends as needed
• Attends and leads various strategic and informational meetings
• Requires occasional early morning or evening teleconferences
