The Research Engineer at Cook Research Incorporated is responsible for completing project deliverables and tasks to support the evaluation of novel design concepts for new medical products and providing support to projects in development at Cook Group companies. This candidate will also be expected to work with a project team to identify clinical needs, formulate new concepts, design prototypes, conduct feasibility assessments and produce documentation for new products. Familiarity with a variety of medical device materials would be advantageous. This position will support research for Critical Care, and Urology Specialties within the MedSurg Division within Cook Medical. 


  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and product management to discover and develop novel medical devices
  • Analyze, interpret, and report results; and identify problems and implement solutions
  • Assure that project deliverables and tasks are technically excellent and completed in a timely fashion. Interact with technical leadership to plan, complete and report results of experiments, tests, prototype development, literature surveys, etc. that contribute to projects
  • Document deliverables. Assure that appropriate documentation is kept detailing project history (reports, laboratory notebooks, invention disclosures, scientific literature, meeting notes, etc.)
  • Maintain and develop the technical capabilities necessary to provide technical solutions for Cook and customer needs. This may include, but is not limited to: Technical Courses, conferences, specific software training, university courses, etc.
  • Support the development of intellectual property for deliverables and tasks. Understand the intellectual property process. Assure the intellectual property is established, harvested, characterized, and protected
  • Ability to work in both collaborative and independent work situations and environments
  • Must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills


Essential Qualifications

  • Technical skills:  BS in engineering or (Mechanical, Biomedical, etc), 1-3 years industry experience, strong background in creative mechanical design preferred
  • Technical knowledge in one or more core areas:  Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, CAD, Design Controls, Medical Device Design
  • Innovative:  ability to innovate in the development of novel concepts and create solutions to technical problems with an eye toward providing practical designs in a timely manner
  • Task oriented:  demonstrated knowledge and ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate the completion of deliverables and tasks, must be highly flexible, have a hands-on approach and be willing to take initiative
  • Communication skills:  ability to effectively communicate through written and verbal means and constructively collaborate with colleagues is required
  • Professional:  ability to remain professional and positive in all personal interactions, and provide an example of good work ethic, a willingness to help, and personal discipline in achieving goals
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States.  Cook does not intend to provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position

Physical Qualifications

  • Personal protective equipment including safety glasses, lab coat and gloves required in many areas associated with this position.
  • Sitting for extended periods, utilizes close visual acuity for working with computers, etc.
  • Works under general office environmental conditions.
